What is MetaTrader 5?
MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is the most popular trading platform in the world, used by millions of traders in more than 130 countries. Developed by MetaQuotes, it offers advanced analytical tools, 21 timeframes (from 1 minute to 1 month), 80 built-in technical indicators and the ability to automate trading with Expert Advisors written in the MQL5 language.
MT5 supports trading in forex, CFDs, futures, stocks and cryptocurrencies. Compared with the older MT4, it offers faster order execution, an advanced economic calendar, a built-in Strategy Tester with multi-threaded optimisation and access to more markets. Proper configuration is half the battle.
Installation and configuration
MetaTrader 5 is available on Windows, macOS, Linux (via Wine), and also as a mobile app on iOS and Android. Download the latest version from your broker's website — many brokers provide a build with preconfigured servers. Alternatively, download the universal version directly from metaquotes.net.
After installation, the first step is connecting to your broker account. Go to File → Login on Trade Account, enter your credentials and select the appropriate server. Make sure you can see your balance, used margin and free margin in the bottom "Trade" panel. If you cannot see this data, check your internet connection and the accuracy of your login details.
Connecting your account
Once the account is connected, note the account type: Cash Balance is a live account, Demo is a practice account. Make sure you are using the right account type before placing your first trade. In the "Market Overview" panel (Ctrl+M) you will see the list of available instruments. Right-click → "Symbols" to add or remove currency pairs, indices or commodities.
Chart configuration is the next important step. Right-click on the chart → Properties → choose your preferred candle type (Japanese candlesticks are the standard), colour scheme (green for bullish, red for bearish) and background (a dark background reduces eye strain during long sessions).
Chart configuration
Workspace layout is a matter of preference, but the recommended standard is: the main chart in the top panel, indicators in separate sub-panels below, and the "Trade" panel at the bottom of the screen. Save this layout as a template (File → Templates → Save Template) so you can quickly restore it after a restart.
Timeframes: for day trading use H1 and M15. For swing trading, H4 and D1. Do not jump between timeframes — pick 2-3 and stick with them. Consistency in analysis matters more than the number of perspectives.
Adding indicators
You will find indicators in the Insert → Indicators menu or on the toolbar. A recommended starter set: RSI (14) in a separate sub-panel, MACD (12,26,9) in a separate sub-panel, and SMA (50) and SMA (200) overlaid on the price chart. Arrange them so they do not obscure each other's information.
Every indicator can be customised: line colours, thickness, style. Change the defaults to something readable — thicker lines, clear colours that contrast with the background. Appearance matters: a readable chart is a chart on which you make decisions faster.
Do not overload the chart with indicators. Three or four well-chosen tools are more valuable than thirteen overlapping lines. Less is more.
Expert Advisors
Expert Advisors (EAs) are programs that automate trading, written in the MQL5 language. MT5 has a rich library of free and paid EAs available through the Market (a button in the bottom panel). Before you run any EA on a live account, test it on a demo account for at least 3 months.
Use the Strategy Tester (Alt+I) to backtest EAs on historical data. Pay particular attention to Max Drawdown (the maximum peak-to-trough loss) — it should be below 20%. A Sharpe Ratio above 1.0 indicates a favourable profit-to-risk ratio. A Profit Factor above 1.5 means a profitable system. Remember: perfect backtest results do not guarantee future profits.
Summary
MetaTrader 5 is a powerful platform that takes time to master. Configure it well once — charts, indicators, workspace template — and stick with that setup. Do not change the configuration every week. A stable trading environment is the foundation of consistent results. MT5 is a tool — you are the trader.
